It's crunch time.... I am working on three different things right now..... all critical! I have a HUGE order that came in from a VIP in Las Vegas! She has ordered for the last 3 years but this year she has tripled her order! YAY! All good news... I am also working on Fall/Winter '12 which will see silhouettes in red, chocolate, hunter green, mustard, etc.... My inspiration for this year's collection takes me to the film "Goodbye Again" with Ingrid Bergman. I was inspired by her style and this era. I have designed a few cloches, an "Indiana Jones" style brim in muted green with a leather band, and a small riding cap in chocolate with leather braided cord to match. All of the hats fit into a lifestyle brand which make them comfortable to wear, light on your head and in line with trend for 2012. The styles are a mix of modernized 20's, 40's and 60's hats. We are excited to present the line and can't wait for you to see it!

Headbands at the Golden Globes!

Last night I was pleased to see a turn of events in a tradition of non-hat wearers at the Golden Globes! Even if we haven't come so far as to wear hats on the red carpet at least there were quite a few headbands! With the emergence of vintage wear as a staple in our wardrobes these days..... celebrities are taking cues from the fashion scene and incorporating looks from the 20's, 30's and 40's which include beaded and crystal headbands to create a more updated modern look to the vintage theme. If last night is any indication of the future, I am positive this trend will continue as hats become featured more and more. In particular I am paying close attention to the FASCINATOR that was made more popular with Kate Middleton over the last year! Even the Kentucky Derby seemed to be more responsive to this trend in fashion headwear as FASCINATOR headwear was on the rise at the last derby! This trend sheds new light on the future of headwear and it's popularity!

Happy New Year! We are ringing in the new year with many a hat! One of our FAV clients from the West Coast has quadrupled her order this season! The heaven's are looking down on us! MUAH! Internet sales are up! BUZZZZZZZZ..... We are HOT! Feel free if you are reading this now to share with your friends and family the BUZZZZZ we are creating with hats! and share this with them! Feeling the trends in hats this season! Last season we were looking at the darker shades of wine, black, chocolate....etc... and feathers... ooh la la.... We introduced the bowler hat in black with an electric blue french ribbon..... thinking it may be too fancy, think again..... pair this hat with a gingham button down OR graphic- t and fitted blazer with your favorite boots.... you are ready to ROCK! The FOX HUNT was a BIG hit with the camel color bucket hat/ feather.... as well as the BUTTERCUP! The BUTTERCUP received KUDOS in INSTYLE FALL Trends '11 kicking of the Fall/Winter season! We are now doing it in a chocolate color with brown braided cord to match! Things are off to a FABULOUS start in 2012!

Inspiration.... Fall/Winter '12

I have had the pleasure to read a few fashion blogs lately to get more inspiration inside this head of mine. Finding inspiration is key right now as I look for what I would like to do for Fall/Winter '12. I have always liked the darker richer shades and I am being drawn to neutrals, pales and even brighter colors for the collection.... Shades of creamsicle, yellow, brilliant blues, orange, mustard and even red ( which I never work with) are creating my inspiration! The colors themselves create a newness for me in this collection.

As I envision these sorbet of colors, it's as if almost a "swirling" effect is taking a hold of them and creating a variety of lollipops in my head! How is that for inspiration? lol.... maybe the process of swirling these little numbers or instead a prop to be used for a future photo shoot... all ideas now.

I am also inspired by Kate's new number, a freeform hat! There is the freeform on top with a bit of structure for the brim. I like how this hat combines both elements of form to create the unexpected.

I am also finding inspiration with the classic "Dick Tracy" hat! Most of you know it by the fedora. I would like to play with this shape for the next collection. I love this color shown, very masculine but elegant in it's own right. I found this hat on a recent trip to Lambertville, NJ. I love the way this hat makes me feel. I stand tall in this hat! I feel like putting on tap shoes and dancing in this hat. I listen to Frank Sinatra in this hat.

Ring, Ring!

I answered the phone and it was Vogue, yes.... American Vogue calling wanting to come by and see my place of establishment ..... hmmmmm..... my studio apartment, you mean ( voices inside of my head saying.... wait.... they can't come here)!!! Well that was in 2004... in a tiny apartment on the Upper East Side which looked alot like this. I recall it like it was yesterday.... my opportunity to show the world my "babies" that lived inside..... call me the hat lady, yes much like the cat lady! Eventually, the reasons for me to move out of the little apartment with very humble beginnings!

Trunk Shows!

This month's trunk shows proved to be a success with many sales and interest in the brand! Look for LB hats on the streets of NY and NJ..... the brand is gaining yet more momentum!!!! We started off with a trunk show in Henri Bendel and finished off with a BANG in Maplewood, NJ at a friend's collaborative trunk show at her house! Bumping into the "Buttercup"!

I finished the morning session of a collaborative HOLIDAY TRUNK show at my friend Colleen's house in the neighborhood! It was fun to meet other women in my area and have them try on the hats.... After the show was over I left in my car and went into town. I was stunned to run into another "BUTTERCUP" on the street! Another women from my neighborhood was wearing her "BUTTERCUP" hat too..... so funny! And...... did I happen to mention, this hat was featured in the InStyle Makeover Fall edition!

Civil War hat block

My friend, David over at REVOLUTION showed me a block he had...... he thinks it is a civil war block. The thoughts swirled in my head.... I can make retro civil war hats. AWESOME! Hi there!!! I haven't blogged in a long time.... I was consumed by the Sp/Su '12 collection which incidently.... looks FANTASTIC if I do say so myself! Pops of yellow, lavender, putty, neutrals are all in this collection! PANAMA straw never looked so GOOD! These hats were made for the caribbean! They are all light as a feather with new styling!

Hat Blocks!

You have heard of hat blocks right???.... But I'm not talking about the hat blocks I use to make hats! Those balsa wood blocks that allow me to shape and crease every form into it's unique "one-off" hat!

I'm talking about... let's say ..... writer's block but in this instance it would be hatter's block! No pun intended! lol..... but it is the middle of summer here.... with all of the heat! and the heat coming from the oven!

It's a good thing I'm not using mercury or I REALLY would be in TROUBLE!!! or maybe I wouldn't ;/...... I'll just opt for a martini later..... and call it a day!!!

I just read an article about famed Philip Treacy being outraged by cheaply made fascinators being produced out of China and the popularity of them in High Street fashion. After reading the article I felt compelled to comment on this latest fashion craze of mass produced fascinators, if you will! It is VITAL for any milliner who has studied the craft to EDUCATE the consumer on the process of millinery. We take for granted that people understand what it is we do. This is a HIGHLY SPECIALIZED form of ART and TRUE craftsmanship that not only myself but other milliners would agree to. What we do can not even compete with a mass produced fascinator made in China. The time, quality of materials used, craftsmanship and artist's skilll to create a vision unique to his/her client are all KEY components of MILLINERY. We craftsmen take pride in our highly specialized trade but it is up to every designer to market their product effectively to our clients so that they appreciate what we do and have a clear understanding. We cannot take for granted that everyone was raised with a well-versed cultural background. EDUCATION is the KEY to a milliner's success! It is VITAL!

Tonight was my debut on television! I was asked by the host of Nostalgia Alley, Mike to appear as a guest on the show with my friend and advocate, David Heffernan of Revolution in Maplewood, NJ! This was my first appearance on television. I hope you like it! ( and yes, I hope I do too!!) I wasn't really prepared to do the show and didn't know what kinds of questions he was going to ask so don't be too hard on me!! lol!!! I got a call this morning about doing a TV show for public access television for SOMA TV. The program is called Nostalgia Alley. I will be talking about millinery and how I got into designing hats. I am excited to speak about such an interesting topic and the lost art and it's return to the fashion scene.

Spiritual awakening!

I am on a spiritual journey, nothing to do with religion but more of a connection with my deep inner self. This morning I watched a video on one of my favorite places, Martha's Vineyard with jazz music in the background. I am feeling more in the moment and in tune with my designs and I am cranking out these beautiful creations! I am currently designing the Country Gentleman and Greta. Loving the landscapes of Martha's Vineyard, especially Gayhead, a place I had visited in a dream before I actually had been there. It is a very peaceful and beautiful place. The landscape and beauty of this place bring me to a place of beauty within myself...... Join me on my adventure!!!

We had a MAJOR SUCCESSFUL trunk show in Maplewood at REVOLUTION .... it caused such a STIR that we have been invited to show a collection of hats at some really COOL VENUES! Also, we have been asked by a new site for more information on the ONE OF A KIND bridal headpieces! We are working out the DETS and we will be sure to keep you posted once we have more info!!! Yesterday's shopping trip through the garment district left me ogling over black shiny chains, crystals, feathers, vintage beading..... etc.... and if that isn't enough to wet your appetite..... I am thinking "Black Swan" inspired headpieces as the next "BIG" trend in wedding headdresses! So inspiring.... I can't wait to get started on my next "BIG" collection! I plan to mix the unexpected to come up with a new trend in wedding headpieces.... try these pieces out for fun as well, who needs a wedding???? I had the pleasure this week to travel to Lambertville, NJ, New Hope, PA and Doylestown, PA . These quaint towns are so inspiring to the artist's eye! The landscape, architecture, and shops lend themselves to a milliner's next creative journey! I was enthralled by the creative town of Lambertville, where I found my vintage trimmings. This town has some very unique shops of shabby chic vintage to art galleries showcasing international artists! I was particularly struck by the landscape paintings. The picture shown here is of the canal in Lambertsville, NJ. I enjoyed this picture of the sun reflecting off the water! This river town in one of the most scenic and it is right next to where I live! If you have enough time you can walk across the bridge over to New Hope, PA....... I can't wait to go back in the Spring when everything starts to blossom....... These towns come alive and it is great to just take everything in and walk along the canal!

I've been working with a men's felt body to come up with the latest creation in LB hats! A man's bowler adorned with a mixed metal chain combination! I call them the winter blahs..... feeling a little under the weather these days! Don't feel really inspired.... look at it outside. It is that time of year you want to go run for cover! A Tribute to Charles Nolan

One summer day a few years ago, I walked into an eclectic and upscale boutique in the Meat Packing District wearing a vintage 60's dress with a one of a kind hat! Upon my entrance I was greeted by the manager of the store, Linda Melazzo, who instantaneously asked me about my hat! I was honored to tell her my tale as a milliner. After chatting with Linda, she set up a meeting for me to meet Charles and to show him my one of a kind hats. I can remember walking into Charles' studio and opening up my box of hats to show him. I was struck by his presence and his genuine interest in my story. He had a generous spirit about him that I was drawn to. He told me of his interest in supporting underprivileged women and what charitable events he was involved in with regarding this. It was this humanitarian side of Charles Nolan that had me wanting to know more about the man behind the label. He had a god given talent in fashion that he was able to parlay with his charitable cause of interest. I was impressed by his character and found him to be a refreshing part of the fashion business. I think back to that day and I am very thankful that I had the opportunity to work with Charles Nolan. He truly was an inspiration!

Revolution Maplewood, NJ!

Just dropped off 10 one of a kind winter hats to my friend, David at Revolution located at 97 Baker Street in Maplewood, NJ! David is an artist himself, another transplant from Tribeca in Manhattan! He is a furniture designer and also a painter. I found out today he used to live below Twyla Tharp! He has a cool soho-esque shabby chic joint in Maplewood. He has built a business out of everything from funky fire lockers that can convert to wine racks to original paintings. He is a master of treasure hunting the eclectic estate sales that call upon his eye and expertise in the art, furniture finishing, housewares, etc. If you are in the area check out his unusual store. As rustic and off the beaten path it is..... it is a part of Maplewood that will make you think you were back in Soho.....during the good old days!

Helena Bonham Carter plays "Queen" to her own sense of style! When viewing images of her I am struck by her images. She is a great actress who comes across as being very comfortable in her own skin which makes me have a love affair with this actress from afar! Being an artist, you find inspiration in the people who set the precedence rather than follow the lead. Some may think this is going against the grain.... but is it really? These are the leaders in fashion and the cutting edge trend setters! I personally, love her style. She gets it! I'm not saying you need to adopt her "quirky" ( if you will) style.... I am just saying that she feels comfortable in her own skin to dress the way she does. Being a fan of vintage and european fashions, my taste reflects more of a european in this sense. I have traveled the world and have experienced a few cultures that I draw from these experiences when I design my collections. I take the "old" (trimmings, craftsmanship ie. freeform blocking and hand stitching) and merge with the "new" to create new trends in fashion! I look to the leaders on the cutting edge to help me create the next best hat! Thanks to Helena for my latest inspiration! Stay true to who you are.

Beach hats!!!

All this snow and cold weather has me dreaming of a beach vacation!!! Hey... and if I can't get to the beach I might as well design beach hats for my impromptu vacay! I am in love with this softer hue of purple!! It has me thinking about sorbet! When I first designed this hat I was inspired by Helena Bonham Carter! The waves of the hat and the flip in the back makes me think of the characters she plays in the movies she appears in. Her sense of style too! She is an individual, true to self expression and her wardrobe reflects that. That is what makes this lady one hip chic! So if you are feeling your own Helena Bonham Carter self, I challenge you to take these hats to the beach and feel your own groove!

Aunt B and Sun Goddess revisited!

I am back in the studio today designing a new version of Aunt B... Aunt D and an updated version of Sun Goddess. I think I am going to design a few more Sp/Su '11 Resort and Occasion hats for the line. I have had a few clients ask for them and the season is right around the corner. I will finish all the hats by hand but I will be using the sewing machine to sew in the headsweats and to tighten the weave at the edge of the brims... ( ok... too technical, who cares????) I just want to point out that I am revamping the Sp/Su '11 line to be more congruent with manufactured cleaner look without losing the authenticity of the one of a kind look to the asymmetry of the hat!!!!

I am a designer that appreciates the feedback of the client without losing the authenticity of the original designs. It creates a WIN-WIN situation and that is what my business is all about! Each hat is touched by the designer's hands and is a real one of a kind which in fact makes each special but I have opted for a cleaner machine stitch look on the headsweat headband. This is another option that my brand can offer.

My initial reaction was shock that the big guys ( ie, Burberry) have taken my original designs to complete their looks. I am the Real McCoy here and my hats have been paid "tribs"!!! I love this pic! It depicts a certain anonymous allure that goes with the art of hat wearing!!! Dressing and style isn't always about having the most trendy item but the art of putting the wardrobe together. I have always been an accessories girl.... LUV them!!!! I mix old and new and always add a staple accessory piece in the mix. It depends upon your mood! What are you feeling??? Listen to yourself. Dressing really is about inner expression! Here is a hat I found that exemplifies my inspiration for the collections I design! The lines and curves in the hat are what my hats are all about. I have yet to design a collection of fabric hats. Most of the hats I design are straws and velour felts. The beauty of the hat is that it can be worn in a myriad of ways! There is no front and back to the hat. The asymmetry lets the user play with her own features to highlight her assets. This allows you to wear the same hat with a totally different look each time you wear the hat! Now, that my dear is very clever!!! It is all about... H-attitude!!!

Thrift Shop and Shabby Chic finds!

I can honestly say some of my BEST finds and style influencers have been found right there at the flea markets and thrift shops. Having come from Western New York in my 20's, I could always find the coolest and latest shops to scout. I cannot wait to get back up there to scour and investigate the newest shops and thrift stores in the area. It has been a year since I have been back. I think the most interesting thing about this way of shopping is that you never know what you are going to find. The small towns are the best place to do this. There is a certain kind of adventurous spirit that comes with this kind of shopping and it is definitely the thrill of the hunt. Once before entering FIT in NY, right before I entered their millinery program I entered my craft hats in a show on Park Avenue and noticed someone had placed a bunch of blocks outside their "Arts and Crafts" home on the Avenue. I could KICK myself now!!!! Not realizing what they were at the time, I use them everyday in my trade! I cannot say that I am fortunate in NY to find these sweet deals but I am always taking trips by internet or by car to find the thrift shop. Hey they even have a show now for the "American Picker" but I have to say my version is much more stylish and savvy!!! Stay tuned for my next adventure!!! LB xxooo ;))))

Crimson skies

Walking home from the train I looked at the sky and enjoyed the sunset with it's varying shades of crimson. I love this color this time of year. I am particularly drawn to the shade of red orange. Color is very important to me.... and now in the winter months when the sunlight is less and colors are rare. The world around me is a very colorful world and even in the depths of winter it becomes even more so important. I am also drawn to the color sconce gold. I work in a room filled with this color. With the holiday decorations in place, I am surrounded by platinum, silver, gold and sconce gold. These are my colors of the moment! Enjoy!!! LB ;)

Inspiration in architecture!

Design and architecture go hand in hand! Today I find myself walking in my neighborhood just

indulged in the architectural landscape that brought me here! I love the diversity of houses here and the old architecture. I feel right at home. Even in winter this place seems magical. How did I end up here? It is like a storybook ending.... Being in fashion, aesthetics are very important but somehow I never imagined living in the suburbs. I have found my best of both lives here, city girl meets village existence! I accept it and find inspiration in the moment and the beauty of my surroundings. Need I mention I am only a 35 commute to the city! I live the best here with the city in close proximity and the beauty of a small village surrounded by beautiful architecture and lush landscape.

It is a part of the past that keeps me creating the future! I love all things vintage! It was a time when craftsmanship was really valued! Nowadays, we live in a culture which is all about fast fashion and made in China. We have really lost all appreciation for what is quality or so it seems. It is all about aesthetics to me and how we present ourselves! A hat says a lot about the person. It has a character all of it's own. When choosing a hat remember these words! Your hat will leave a lasting impression!

I entertained a house full of guests this past week! The house was full and lively, something I tend to cherish this time of year! My mom brought a scarf set for my daughter that a friend of her's had hand knitted! It was adorable.... then it really dawned on me how special it was because it was made just for my daughter and the thought that my mom's friend had knitted it especially for her. Gifts like this are rare, especially with mass produced being the norm.

My hats are all handmade and entirely handstitched. The creases and folds are unique and asymmetrical because they are all handsculpted! That makes them special and really unlike any other hats you see in the marketplace. Other milliners use preformed blocks in hat shapes and use sewing machines to stitch the headsweats in place. I use a pick stitch to hand sew in each headsweat to the hat. All of these qualities constitute each hat as a one of a kind. The time and effort that goes into a hat is really what sets the hats apart. It is the season that makes me reflect on the true meaning of handcrafted and handmade which is what I am truly about.

I used to love all dark colors and something lately has me singing the shades of Peacock and Indigo! I am in love with these colors! Today inspiration comes from these pictures and my recent shopping trip through NYC! I found some bracelets made in India which were made out of different studs in all different types of metal. Most of the bracelets were chunky but had different textures and shapes of metal studs! I will post a picture soon! Here are pictures from a fashion shoot that were published in Elle Mexico. The Milliner's Critique

I am not only a milliner but also a stylist with an eye for style, proportion and color. Originally, I wanted to be a fashion designer but started my career later in life that millinery made more sense to me. Esthetically, architecturally and sculpturally I started reinventing the classic hat shapes! I found that as a milliner I was not limited to traditional shapes and patterns. The freeform blocking technique became my art form.

Today, I enjoy reshaping and even reinventing the traditional shapes. I find that the hat that is well suited to a face needs the eye of a well-trained milliner. It used to be that people were afraid to wear hats, that they didn't like the attention or felt hats didn't look good on them. I find that proportion and shapes are very critical and I bet that even the most savvy customer will find a hat and style from the collection that they will feel comfortable in and will suit their face shape. Remember when selecting a hat, proportion, shape and color are critical!!! Hope to see you soon in an LB hat!

It finally turned brisk on us... after a sweet transition of seasons! It is time to dust off the vintage cape hanging in the closet! If you can get your hands on a tweed cape even better! reds, camels, khaki, muted greens! Luscious! I am thinking if it isn't too cold, I can pair my cape with the Renaissance in putty color! Suede platform boots in camel to finish the look! If it is chilly wear don this Swinger! It's time to head to the winery or take a trip to Pennsylvania border to check out the antique shops! Just don't forget your hat!

Autumn colors are here!!! I find this season to be so inspirational! I love the orange, gold and camel hues of the season.... yum... think chestnut, pumpkin, squash!

Pair these colors with the "Buttercup" and you are sure to feel renewed for the season! This hat in particular suites most shaped faces and is a very versatile hat! I wore it today and my supplier was so complimentary of the hat!

The "Buttercup" is one of my signature hats and will remain a part of the collection!

Getting Glam for Tommorrow!

I will be dressed in my Sunday best tomorrow as I prepare the pork tenderloin with all of it's fixings for the first of many family gatherings! I have even prepared my garb for the Sunday feast! I will be wearing a this black little number with my black vintage dress! Tis the season! I don't even have to decorate the house because Mr. Spider decided to weave his web to the right of the door! However, I didn't forget the Thanksgiving wreath on the outside of the door. It looks divine. Tonight we added the finishing touches to the dining room with a potted plant to match my decor and the picture of me from my childhood reframed in a gold leaf frame..... I am so pleased! Tomorrow I will post pictures of inspiration for the day's event! For now... here is the little black number I will be wearing!

My calling in life has always been about style and fashion and I feel empowered to inform women about dressing and how to wear a hat. Many women believe they can't wear hats which is untrue. It is my job to let you know that there is a hat for you! Depending upon your shape of face and stature, my hats are not the traditional shapes you are used to seeing. We have brought back the Country Gentleman, The Retro, and the Fly Girl ( Malia Mills FAV)! The trimmings on all of these styles may be interchanged. Looking ahead to Fall/Winter'10, the trend will be camel. Camel trench coats for the fall and winter camel cashmere coats will abound. With recessionary times upon us think 40's and the understated dressing with muted colors hence..... camel. Hats were hip in the 40's. This "Annie" hat is great to pair with a trench or overcoat. Here is a great look for Fall. This is one to sure to turn heads.

Where I find Inspiration!

My inspiration since I started designing hats has all along been vintage, even before vintage was in style. I guess that is why I pursued a career in millinery. Who does that trade now-a-days anyway.... growing up with 40's music, rummaging through garage sales .... all make me the person I am today.... I also had the fortunate opportunity to see the world and all cultures as a flight attendant for a number of years.

My beginnings are wholesome and humble and I keep these things as core values in my line of work. Color, textures and sillouette are all key when I design a collection. It has to "feel" right. I always say I am a trend-setter and psychic when I design. I have the uncanny ability to "see" what is going to be the next trend... I picked hats because at the time no one was really designing hats and I thought it would be a niche that I could market more easily because a milliner was a "rare" breed!

We were thrilled when Well-Wed asked us to participate in this year's fashion showcase. We featured our headpieces at the Rochester and Southampton bridal shows. Headpieces on the Runway!

We received word today that the our headpieces got "rave" reviews from the crowd gathered at the Memorial Art Gallery in Rochester, NY on Saturday, January 23rd. The event was highlighted by a runway show featuring our custom headpieces!!! Thanks to Well-Wed Magazine and their staff for choosing our creations to be featured in their events this year! Marie Antoinette inspired headpieces

Inspiration for the headpieces for this years Well-Wed Magazine's event came from Marie Antoinette. Colors of baby blues, pinks and ivory were the core focus..... and of course the big plumes and ribbons! One of the headpieces was decorated with a linear bow combination with tendrils of the ribbons flowing from the head to the shoulder in varying lengths. I used shades of pinks and deep plums. The various elements of color and proportion made for a clean elegant headband inspired by Marie Antoinette.

Issac Mitzrahi gave this headpiece his thumbs up in a recent post of it on facebook! Thanks Issac!
